teeny tiny micro hydroelectric system. is it possible!?
i was thinking of using an aquarium Canister Filter and with the output tube trying to set up a mini hydroelectric system to power some led's or just to be able to power anything would be awesome.. first of all is it even possible? do they make small enough generators that can actually produce any power from the small flow. the flow would not be extreme. possibly 2 to 3 gallons per minute. is it possible ? please tell me what you think and how it would be done.. i dont know much about this stuff its just an experiemental idea i had...

This depends on the power available from the pressure and flow, and also the suitability of the turbine, whether it is suitable to use the flow to operate a small generator. It will need to be a small DC permanent magnet motor, something like the same mechanical power as the flow provides, probably a low rpm 12V type is better than 3V type as it could generate more voltage per rpm.
Here is a formula using your flow and a head of 1.5m of water across the turbine:
Power_W = (Mass_kg x Gravity_m/s/s x Height_m) / time_s
= (10kg x 9.8m/s/s x 1.5m) / 60s
=2.45W (no losses)
This is adequate power to light an led, even allowing losses, (<100mW required) but a 12V motor will still need to turn at several hundred rpm to generate the voltage required, which is greater than ~3V for a red led (requiring the lowest voltage). There are very small motors, but it ideally needs an efficient type with an ironless rotor, as the normal iron rotor "cogs" with the field magnets. The vibrator motor from an old mobile phone might suit.
Maybe a computer fan can be adapted to this type of job.
