how do you install a bike rack on a station wagon?

If it is a new or used rack, gp to the manufacturers web site. If it is a new rack consider taking it back and exchanging for a rack where the primary weight is carried on the bumper rather than via retention straps. A Saris Bones rack fits that style rack well. A roof rack also works well on a station wagon.
If this is your choice you need to find six solid pieces of door or body to fit your hooks behind, top, bottom, and sides. Avoid putting the hooks behind bare glass at all costs. You need to be ingenious as you go because the maim concern is the gravity side of the forces. If a metal molding goes around the window frame you can simply open the rear cargo door and close the hooks inside. Another good place to hook on is if the roof has rail or gutter going around it. The upward force can be dealt with by placing the hooks in the bottom of the door OR, even better, the underside of the bumper. The sides hooks can either fit inside the rear door cracks.
I hate the retention strap only racks. You must be meticulous in your placement and tensioning procedures. Tension it up, go to the opposite side and recheck and re-tension... go back and forth until you are happy. Be sure to tie off the straps too!
The racks that have a 'leg' which rests on the bumper to take all the downward forces seems so much more safe to me. All the downward forces are born by the racks 'lags' and the bumper.... just makes sense to me.... then all you have to do is adjust the straps for upward and side forces.
