I began working with rescue dogs several years ago. I suppose I got involved with it because I empathized with their situation. I know what it's like to have everyone give up on you, write you off as a lost cause, "damaged goods," when all that was needed was some love and care.

I fostered 8 dogs before I adopted my own dog. He was used as a bait dog for a fighting ring in the Bronx, NYC. When I walked into Animal Care and Control (the city kill shelter), I knew I would be adopting a dog, not just fostering it. And I knew the dog I wanted would be the dog no one else wanted.

I had seen my dog posted on their website and noted that he had been there for a week (not a good sign as living time for pit bulls in city shelters rarely exceeds that). When I asked after him, shelter employees didn't even know he was there! I had to pull up his information on my phone to prove to them that they did, in fact, have the dog in their shelter.

He was on the quarantine floor, three doors away from the windowless, steel door no dog walks out of (he had less than 24 hours left). Every employee told me he wasn't worth it, that he didn't care about dogs or people, that it was a waste of time to consider adopting him.

He had been attacked so viscously and repeatedly that he looked more like Swiss cheese than a Pit Bull mix. He was horribly emaciated, too sick with kennel cough to stand for long periods of time. He had a gaping wound around his neck where a prong collar had become embedded. But he came out of his cage when he saw me outside (he wouldn't move for shelter employees), put his head in my lap, and let out a heavy sigh. My heart broke and I signed his adoption papers that day.

Today, he is almost 70 pounds, happy, healthy, and in training to become a Therapy Dog. He disproved every assumption made about him by employees at that shelter! He loves dogs and adores people (he's a grade A cuddler). The fact that he was so close to death (my vet told me all I could do is "make him comfortable") and turned around just because, by some slim chance, this new person he'd met (me) might be different from all of the rest that had treated him so cruelly, is a constant inspiration to me. If he could let go of his terrible past so quickly, not worry about the future, and just enjoy the moment, I should be able to as well.

I have fostered several other dogs since I adopted him and will continue to do so. To take a dog dismissed by so many and transform him/her into the loving pet he/she want to be gives me great joy.

To best summarize it: I can't change the world, but for the few dogs I can save, I can change *their* world.
