The bathroom tap was left on, bathroom flooded - came through floor into dining room... electric safe?
The bathroom basic drains very slowly, the tap was left on and running quite fast, this overflowed on to the floor and at some point during about 3 hours poured through the ceiling.
This has dripped/ran down the light fitting and light switch (amongst other areas) which has tripped the electrics on that circuit... my concern now is - is it safe to reset the trip (I'm guessing not), will leaving it to dry rectify the problem? and if so how long?
Do you think we'll need to make an insurance claim?

I've cleaned up (as much as possible) the visible water but I'm concerned about
The room that's affected (Dining room) is on the same circuit as most of our downstairs - and garage, the freezer is in the garage so is now not working 
Would it be safe to flip the trip?
Yes try to re set the breaker, you won't get a shock as it is plastic to touch. Clearly a short circuit has caused the device to operate so it will do it again if there is still a problem.
You are supposed to have the electrical installation inspected and tested after a flood, this will take someone about half a day and cost about £100 - £200 and if satisfactory you will get three certificates which will keep the insurance company happy. They may even pay for the inspection.
It is a report of the condition of the installation which doesn't include remedial work.
Don't listen to that yank, any overheating WILL cause the breaker to operate, that is what they are designed to detect, heat! And yours is clearly doing its job as short circuits generate lots of heat.
