My Italian Greyhounds collar is rubbing on his neck and making a big red spot? What to do?

My Italian Greyhounds Martingale Collar from his previous owner is rubbing on his neck and creating a red spot. We have to get a new martingale collar online, but the red spot will still be there. Is there a product or home remedy that can help the hair grow back and make the red spot go away? Thanks in advance!

Actually martingale collars can and should be left on the greyhound especially when you take it out for a walk. They slip out of regular collars.

Hello there! It is fairly common for dogs to get skin irritation or hair loss around the collar areaSome breeds are more susceptible than others. Unfortunately, the Italian Greyhound is one of them. Often times, the best thing to do is to use a harness. The use of a harness will alleviate the issues around the neck and they usually do not cause a problem with the skin underneath . I usually advise owners to remove the harness when they are not walking their pet. Your dogs tags can be put on the harness itself. I also highly advise having Your Pet microchiped. Until Your Dog has grown accustomed to wearing the harness, the best thing to do is leave it on 24hrs a day.Typically,it only takes about 3-4 days for this to happen. During those 3-4 days, he/she will have the tags on the harness.If your dog is the type to try and get out of your yard, at least the tags will be on while the harness is in use. After this period, when you remove the harness is when the microchipping comes in handy.God forbid the little one should get out, any vet or the ASPCA will be able to scan and find you. If the Martingale collar does not cause any irritation, just keep the tags on the collar and use the harness for walks. This way there will be nothing irritating the skin or causing hair loss. This is also very helpful to avoid any pulling or tugging on the neck.

Now, how to care for the skin. There is an old time remedy that works very well. It is tea. Tea contains Tannic acid, which has been used for many years to calm and heal irritations and infections of the skin. Simply brew some tea with 2-3 tea bags/12oz of water. Put it in the refrigerator and let it cool. Take a cotton ball with warm water and gently wash the area that is red. Then take another cotton ball and soak it with the tea. Dab it on the red area and let it dry. Do this twice a day. You should begin to see a change within 24hrs. It can take up to a week to get the skin back to normal.After this, you should begin to see new hair growth. It will be slow, but eventually you will never even know that there was a problem. There are some cases where the hair does not grow back,but this is uncommon.

If your dog is very itchy in this area,or you begin to see other areas like the one on the neck, you need to see the Vet. There are many conditions that cause the symptoms that your dog has. Also,if you do not see any change, or the reddened area gets worse or looks sticky and wet, this would be an indication of an infection that may need some antibiotic and/ or special shampoo.

All in all, I believe that it it a simple case of your dogs collar irritating him/her, just as you said. Just follow the instructions that I wrote and you should see an improvement in no time.
