I have a reef aquarium, about 2 years old, and although some coral thrive, others dont.?
The ones that dont are hard corals. I use filtered water (not RO) and I dont have a refugium, but use a wet dry filter system w/protein skimmer. Any ideas?
specs: 46 gallon, 300 watt Metal Halide system.All chemical perimeters are OK. Occasionally we get red algae, but star fish eats much of it. Fish are clown-1, damsels-2,cromies-2,blennies-1, angel fish-1 , starfish-1 and crabs and snails.The rock is Live Rock, corals are leathers, mushrooms, polyps,pumping Xenia, starburts polyps, kenya trees, tube worms, hammer coral.
Food for corals is marine snow and cyclopeeze.
The most glaring problem I see with regards to your system is the use of a wet/dry filter. This type of filtration is ok for fish only, but in a reef it becomes a nitrate factory. SPS (hard coral) are extremely sensitive to excess nutrients in the tank.
Wet/dry filters also known as trickle filters have portions of the bioballs above the water line. When water flows over the Bio Balls from your tank, it carries detritus from your display tank. Some of the detritus works its way down the bio balls to degrade and act as food for the Biological Filter. However, the detritus that remains above the water line degrades and doesn't get broken down by the biological filter as efficiently. This adds to higher nitrates and in turn phosphates.
Higher nitrates and phosphates are not toxic to fish, but it is food for algae and detrimental to the health of sps coral.
My recommendation to you would be to SLOWLY remove the bio balls over the course of a few weeks. This will give your bacteria colonies time to adjust to varying bacterial loads by the changing quantity of bio balls. In addition, I'd suggest running Phosban on your system. This is a Ferric Oxide compound that uses a small, inexpensive fluidized media reactor to eliminate phosphates. You'll be THRILLED with the results. I've posted links to these two products below.
